Speaker:

Welcome to the I Can.

2

:

He Can podcast the podcast

for literally anyone.

3

:

However, if you are a woman, you're

probably the person listening on the

4

:

other side of that speaker right now.

5

:

I'm your host Sarai, And you'll

pretty much get to know everything

6

:

about me, including the things that

make me say I can't, but also the

7

:

things that remind me that he can.

8

:

So without further ado, let's

jump into today's episode.

9

:

I.

10

:

All right, you guys.

11

:

Welcome back to episode four.

12

:

and I am very, very excited

for today's episode.

13

:

It's actually the start of a new series

And while I am going to be discussing

14

:

other topics in different episodes,

this series is only going to be about

15

:

worship worship songs, artists, and

we're gonna kind of break them down.

16

:

So there's just so, so much to talk

about, and I'm just, I'm super excited

17

:

and I couldn't have honestly even done

this without one of my friends, Hector.

18

:

he is also on the worship team of my

church, so I'm very grateful he actually

19

:

gave me this idea because there really

is just so much to unpack here and.

20

:

The first person that we're going

to be discussing today is an

21

:

artist by the name of Brandon Lake.

22

:

However, every time I do one of these

episodes, I do tend to go down a

23

:

little bit of a research rabbit hole.

24

:

Um, but I'm not sure if you guys knew

that in the Renaissance period there

25

:

was such a thing as the division

of secular music and sacred music.

26

:

So secular music, meaning music of genres

that are not religious in nature Now.

27

:

It's interesting to me because

in today's world, we're seeing

28

:

more than ever, honestly the

tremendous growth of worship music.

29

:

I'm not mad about that.

30

:

I'm really not mad about that.

31

:

'cause worship music is

just, it's fantastic.

32

:

but secular music really is just

kind of not what it used to be.

33

:

Now when I think of music in

general, or music that we grew up

34

:

with, it mostly brings up memories.

35

:

Moments in time, if you will.

36

:

So I'm a nineties kid and I think about

the last bit of good secular music

37

:

that there was, and that's really in

the nineties when I was growing up.

38

:

But when I think of that music

it reminds me of my childhood,

39

:

not how it made me feel.

40

:

It didn't change me in any way.

41

:

Even till this day.

42

:

I can listen to the Spice Girls.

43

:

Backstreet Boys, Selena Nirvana.

44

:

I could keep going honestly, but none

of those artists ever changed me.

45

:

Yeah, it made me happy.

46

:

You can't really take out the joy

from listening to those songs that

47

:

bring back good times, good memories,

but those were in fact the good days.

48

:

And that's all it does for me now.

49

:

It's all that it did for me then.

50

:

but there's nothing like what

worship music does to your heart.

51

:

It really isn't.

52

:

So worship music was made to praise

the highest of highs, God, the Father.

53

:

Now before I jump into the good

stuff, into the series of worship, I

54

:

do wanna point out something that I

learned, um, in my research in this

55

:

episode, and that is that even Jesus

sing and praise, I'm not going to

56

:

read all of those chapters, in full.

57

:

It is quite a lot to go through

and to cover in one day, but.

58

:

If you are curious, just like I was, you

can definitely see how Jesus, our Lord

59

:

and Savior worship God through music

and some of these chapters in the Bible.

60

:

Anyway, I will note these scriptures

in the note section for you guys.

61

:

And they are Matthew 26 30, mark

:

62

:

Um, and if I'm being honest, the more that

I do these episodes or these podcasts.

63

:

The more I learned of the humility

that Jesus had and the humility that he

64

:

showed everyone He, I mean, he would say

truly, I say to you, but I mean, I don't

65

:

feel worthy of like saying that myself.

66

:

Um, so anyway, I'm gonna scratch

what I was gonna say there.

67

:

But he was truly not ashamed

to stand with his brothers and

68

:

sisters in Christ and worship God.

69

:

There was no shame.

70

:

Absolutely none.

71

:

And.

72

:

I know some people who, you know, they're

different kind of worshipers as they say.

73

:

Like you see different kind

of people, in church and, you

74

:

know, they stand differently.

75

:

Some, just have no shame and they're

just going all out, which is amazing.

76

:

I love to see that.

77

:

But, Jesus had no shame and he

praised God with everyone, and

78

:

that's just so beautiful to see.

79

:

but now to get to the crux of it

all, worship music, the famous.

80

:

Singer that we're going to be

talking about is Brandon Lake.

81

:

you guys have heard of Brandon

Lake, there's probably not a

82

:

song that he is not involved in.

83

:

Like he, he is just amazing.

84

:

but there are so, so many different

artists today that I just wanted

85

:

to kind of briefly shout out and

touch on its Elevation Worship.

86

:

I know they are also way up there.

87

:

Elevation Worship Hillsong,

United Maverick City, CC Winans.

88

:

Ugh.

89

:

Love her.

90

:

Phil Wickham.

91

:

Cody Kass, Fort Frank.

92

:

He just had a concert.

93

:

Danny Gokey, torn Wells.

94

:

Ryley.

95

:

Morillo.

96

:

I am just, I love her.

97

:

Love, love, love her.

98

:

Uh, Saray Rivera and, uh, Chand Moore

and Naomi Rain are a part of Maverick

99

:

City, but they are also getting a bit

more famous, as well on their own.

100

:

And, Chris Brown.

101

:

Also sings with Elevation.

102

:

now, sometimes with Maverick, but not

Chris Brown, the one that you guys know.

103

:

Anyway, going back to Brandon, he's

just, man, like, there's not a song, a

104

:

lyric or a word that he sings that won't

make your heart feel some kind of way.

105

:

And yes, like I said before, secular

music can pull at your heartstrings,

106

:

but when music is centered in Christ.

107

:

And is embellished with the words of the

gospel and is used to cry out to God.

108

:

It just, it does something to your spirit.

109

:

It really does.

110

:

I'm, I'm telling you, it is powerful.

111

:

Goosebumps don't mean anything.

112

:

Goosebumps is just something that

happened to you in the nineties when

113

:

you heard the new Backstreet Boys song.

114

:

Um, I mean, at least for

me, that's what happened.

115

:

But anyway, out of all the

songs that Brandon Lake.

116

:

Has written and sang.

117

:

There was one that he

released earlier this year.

118

:

It's called Daddy's, DNA.

119

:

And at first glance, the song

seems like it's about his father,

120

:

but in reality he is talking about

his Heavenly Father about God.

121

:

And I wanted to play a clip, but because

I am on various, podcasts like Apple,

122

:

Spotify, I don't wanna trigger anything.

123

:

Uh, by playing other people's music.

124

:

So I, I don't want that.

125

:

So I'm just gonna read some of the

lyrics because I do want to say those

126

:

words and have you hear those words.

127

:

so without further ado, here's just a

few verses and choruses from daddy's DNA.

128

:

It says, I thought the world had

something special I was missing.

129

:

My daddy told me not to chase it.

130

:

I didn't listen.

131

:

Fell downhill a mile a

minute before I knew it.

132

:

I was living in a pigsty a

long, long way from home.

133

:

Now, honestly, when I heard that,

and he's saying that I was living

134

:

in a pigsty a long, long way from

home, what a deep way to explain

135

:

the mess that you made of your life.

136

:

that's powerful.

137

:

And especially when you hear it

coming from his mouth, with his voice.

138

:

It's just, it's very, it's deep.

139

:

Now the chorus says, I went running

like a rebel, racked up debts.

140

:

I couldn't pay.

141

:

I went dancing with the devil

with one foot in the grave.

142

:

How the heaven did I get here?

143

:

Notice he didn't say hell.

144

:

How the heaven did I get here when?

145

:

And through it all away?

146

:

All I've given you was trouble.

147

:

All you've given me was grace,

148

:

man.

149

:

Just even saying it, I

just kind of get chills.

150

:

Now verse two says, and the freedom

I was chasing felt like prison.

151

:

Lord, I've done so many

things, wish I didn't.

152

:

And after all the risky business,

could I ever be forgiven?

153

:

I'm afraid to even ask to come back home.

154

:

You guys, when I heard that sentence

the first time, it, it just.

155

:

Punched me in the gut.

156

:

It just punched me in the gut

because when I first started walking

157

:

with Jesus, it was so hard to

repent and to ask for forgiveness.

158

:

'cause the things that I've done

were just so dark and so, uh, just

159

:

so horrible that how could you ask

someone to forgive those things?

160

:

And he said that.

161

:

And After all the risky business,

could I ever be forgiven?

162

:

I'm afraid to even ask to come back home.

163

:

But you know what?

164

:

God does forgive.

165

:

God does forgive, and he loves you,

and he accepts you, and he will

166

:

take you back home because as they

say, Jesus left the 99 for the one.

167

:

So as long as that one repents and

truly, truly just seeks forgiveness.

168

:

You will be able to go back home,

there's no doubt about that.

169

:

Now I'm gonna skip a few verses and chorus

and jump to the very end of the song.

170

:

This section right here really

showed me where he was tying in

171

:

the words of the song to the Bible.

172

:

And I'll tell you guys about it

after as soon as I'm done reading it.

173

:

This last verse goes, there

was something in the marrow.

174

:

Always coursing through my

veins, but buried deeper than

175

:

the rubble is my daddy's DNA.

176

:

Now listen.

177

:

Listen you guys, those last

words, but buried deeper than

178

:

the rubble is my daddy's DNA.

179

:

Those last words, man, it's a

reminder to us that despite all.

180

:

The things that we do.

181

:

All the things that we carry, the

burdens of our past, the problems.

182

:

This is a reminder.

183

:

We are made of him.

184

:

We are made of Christ of God in his image.

185

:

And as the Bible says, we are made in

his image and there is some of him in us.

186

:

It doesn't matter what way we look

at it, there is some of him in us.

187

:

Now you all know that I like to throw

in my scriptures here as well, so I

188

:

couldn't leave it out of this episode.

189

:

Genesis 1 27 specifically says, so

God created man in his own image,

190

:

in the image of God, he created him,

male and female, he created them.

191

:

Now, that's in the very beginning

of the Bible, but just like it

192

:

says there in Brandon's song.

193

:

Buried deeper than the

rubble is my daddy's DNA.

194

:

And surely you find it there

in the beginning of the Bible.

195

:

Now also in Colossians one 15, it says,

the sun is the image of the invisible

196

:

God, the firstborn, overall creation.

197

:

And time and time again, we are constantly

reminded that we are made in his image.

198

:

So don't let the things of your past.

199

:

Don't let those things keep

you buried in the rubble.

200

:

Don't let the weight of those

things keep you from being

201

:

reminded that God is in you.

202

:

That good is also in you.

203

:

Pray on it.

204

:

If you're not sure, and if you don't know

how to pray, it shouldn't be a problem.

205

:

the Bible says in Psalm

1 0 5, 2, sing to him.

206

:

Sing praise to him, tell

of all his wonderful acts.

207

:

You don't have to say with your words

all the things that you wanna say.

208

:

And in all honesty, God already

knows what you wanna say to him.

209

:

He knows you before you were born, so he

already knows what you're going through.

210

:

But the act of you talking to him and

praying to him is your show of wanting

211

:

to build that relationship with him.

212

:

So if you don't know the words,

just find a worship song.

213

:

Find a worship song and sing to him.

214

:

Praise it to him because that is a way

that you are going to show a wonderful act

215

:

in building your relationship with him.

216

:

Psalm 95, 1 says.

217

:

Come let us sing for joy to the Lord.

218

:

Let us shout aloud to the rock of our

salvation and he truly is the rock.

219

:

He is the one that

continuously shows up for us.

220

:

Time and time again, whether

you're a believer in God or

221

:

you're not, he is always there.

222

:

And for those people that don't believe

in God or have doubts in God, when you

223

:

say, oh, I have a gut feeling about this.

224

:

I have a gut feeling about that.

225

:

That's God, that's the Holy Spirit.

226

:

That is your discernment, kicking

in and warning you, making

227

:

sure that you don't go astray.

228

:

Making sure that you don't do the wrong

thing or hang around the wrong person.

229

:

Discernment is of God

and of the Holy Spirit.

230

:

So you need to pay attention to all of

these things 'cause he is always with you.

231

:

He is the rock of our salvation.

232

:

Now you can listen to some

great music and just sing along.

233

:

That's really all it takes.

234

:

You know, it's, it's not very complicated.

235

:

That's all it took for me

to open up my heart really.

236

:

And one day I'll share my testimony with

you guys and we'll go down that road.

237

:

It's a very emotional, very

dark kind of road in the middle,

238

:

but there was light at the end.

239

:

And there's light at the end

because there's Jesus, and there's

240

:

a lot for me to say about that.

241

:

But use music to draw closer to God.

242

:

Use music in the way that

it was intended to be used.

243

:

Worship will connect you in

ways that you won't ever expect.

244

:

Never.

245

:

You can't imagine what it

will do for your heart.

246

:

I hope this has blessed you.

247

:

Please be sure to return since I

will definitely, definitely need to

248

:

make this a series because there's

just so much more to talk about.

249

:

So many more artists,

musicians, so many songs.

250

:

There's just too much greatness,

honestly, that we need to

251

:

uncover with worship music.

252

:

So I thank you guys for listening.

253

:

Till next time my friends.

To whoever reads this:
I'm glad you're here and I hope you stay a while. There is something I need to give back to the world - and to you.

That 'something' is my story, my life and my words that were once marked by pain, but are now marked by love and a new found faith in Christ. But hold it right there! Do not be quick to judge. While the root of all my talks are founded in the Bible - do not mistake what I have to say for 'unremarkable' or 'not relatable'.

My story is different than yours. However, if there is one thing we 100% have in common, it's that God has always been with us. If you agree - stick around. If you DON'T agree - stick around too. Let me show the unbeliever, the doubter, and the unsure person, how God has always been there.
